The Pack 86 Pinewood Derby guide brings the essential dimensions, construction rules, inspection process, and race-day expectations into one place.

The numbers to know

These limits come from the Pack’s existing Derby rules. Current-year instructions from race officials always take priority.

Build rules

  • Use the official kit’s wood block, axles, and wheels.
  • Pre-made bodies are not allowed.
  • Wheels may only be lightly sanded to remove molding imperfections.
  • Axles may be polished but otherwise not altered.
  • No bearings, washers, bushings, springs, propulsion, or starting devices.
  • The car must be free-wheeling.

Weight & appearance

  • Total weight may not exceed 5.0 ounces.
  • Weight must be securely built into or attached to the car.
  • No loose materials are allowed inside the body.
  • Details are welcome when they stay within size limits and are securely attached.
  • Cars may not be shaped to hold the starting pin.

Inspection

  • Every car must pass technical inspection before racing.
  • Cars that miss a rule may be adjusted and presented again before the final deadline.
  • No alterations are allowed after registration.
  • Damage may be repaired if it does not delay racing.

A practical build trail

Sketch

Trace the block on paper, draw top and side views, and let your Scout lead the design.

Shape

Keep a flat front for the starting pin and leave room for securely mounted weight.

Align

Install axles square to the body. Roll-test on a level floor and adjust until the car tracks straight.

Tune

Polish permitted axle surfaces, use dry graphite lubricant only, and keep matched wheels and axles together.

Inspect

Measure length, width, clearance, and weight before official check-in.

Race day

Fast cars. Great sportsmanship.

Scouts cheer for one another, follow race officials’ directions, and celebrate craftsmanship as well as speed.

Each Scout enters one current-year car.

Only officials and current racers enter the track area.

Awards recognize speed, design, creativity, and Scout spirit.
